What is CYT@school? CYT@school, a division of CYT, brings introductory performing arts directly to schools and invites those students to participate. We offer two types of programs: after school or during the school day for a residency program.
CYT@school is devoted to introducing performing arts to children, one school at a time, by providing a high-quality experience that is educational and enjoyable.
What is the emphasis of a CYT@school program? The emphasis is on the
experience of exploring performing arts. It’s about the process of getting to the showcase and what they will take with them after the session is over – the joy, the hard work and feeling successful in knowing they’ve done their best. Visual and performing arts reinforce literacy, speaking and listening. They provide natural opportunities for students to communicate, collaborate, create and critically-think.
Isn’t CYT a Christian group? How would that work?
Although we adhere to Judeo-Christian values, we are a 501 (c)(3) non-profit educational organization, not a religious one. We would respect the appropriate boundaries in any school setting. We are going to schools to introduce theater arts - we will honor that opportunity.
Is every student welcome?
There are a limited number of spots available in each program. Let us know if your child has any special needs so we can be prepared to help meet them.
Do you offer programs specific to the older grades?
Yes! We currently provide a full-time performing arts program in partnership with Chula Vista Learning Community Charter High School. We also started a theater arts academy in partnership with Escondido Charter High School. We have had residency and after school programs at local middle schools. The length of the session, the curriculum and other specifics can be worked out between the director and the school contact.
What is included in the cost for each student?
Our fees are affordable. They include a CYT@school t-shirt, script, access to tracks and 2 tickets to a MainStage CYT show for that session. In the after school model there is a fixed price. It is slightly higher for those schools that charge us facilities-use fees. To bring the cost per student down, programs can be sponsored by parent organizations, arts funding, etc. Visit your school's registration page for individual pricing.
Will there be a performance?
Yes! We like to schedule a performance, a showcase, to share with family and friends a part of what has been learned. Each student receives a CYT@school t-shirt to wear, along with a costume piece that is provided. We use no sets and props are minimal. If parents want to provide extras, that can be coordinated with the teaching artists.
What can you tell me about the showcase?
Our showcases are familiar works that are abridged versions of recognizable, family shows. They have been adapted to maximize ensemble numbers.
Won’t there be a lot for us to do as a school to get started?
There is very little start up for the school. You just need to decide where we can hold classes and the showcase. We will coordinate any other details.
When can we get started?
Right away! We offer 8-week sessions throughout the school year in fall, winter and spring. Contact us today to get more information on how you can have CYT@school at your school.
